Start with the bet receipt
A void bet is a bet, or part of a bet, treated as having no action under the applicable settlement rule. For an ordinary cash single, the stake is normally returned without a profit. In a multiple, a void selection may be removed while the rest of the bet continues. A losing selection is different: it has been settled as a loss, rather than cancelled.
Before interpreting a result, record the bet ID, accepted odds, stake type, market name and whether the ticket is a single, accumulator or another product. Those details matter more than the short label in a results feed. This guide uses bet365's public GB help pages as dated examples, checked on 26 September 2026. They are not universal rules for every bookmaker, sport or promotion.
Cash singles and accumulators work differently
Bet365's GB settlement help says a void single returns the stake. It also says an accumulator with a void selection is settled on the remaining selections; a losing selection makes the accumulator lose. That means one void leg does not automatically refund the entire multiple.
Consider a hypothetical £5 cash treble at decimal prices 2.00, 3.00 and 1.50. If all three win with no adjustments, its total return is £45: £5 × 2 × 3 × 1.5. If the 3.00 leg is void and the other two win, settling on those remaining prices gives £15: £5 × 2 × 1.5. The profit is £10 after subtracting the original stake. This calculation assumes an ordinary accumulator with no bonus or special terms.
If one of those remaining selections loses, the void leg does not rescue the bet. For the difference between stake, profit and return, see our fractional and decimal odds guide.
A non-runner does not always mean a refund
Bet365's non-runner help distinguishes withdrawal before an event from retirement after participation, which is governed by the sport's rules. It also flags an important antepost exception: those bets generally remain at risk if the selection does not take part unless the stated terms provide otherwise.
Check whether the bet was antepost and whether a non-runner concession actually applied when it was accepted. Do not infer a refund from the fact that no performance took place. If another runner is withdrawn, a Rule 4 deduction can instead reduce winnings on a remaining selection; a deduction is not the same as making your selection void.
Postponement and abandonment are different questions
A postponement moves the event to another time. Abandonment stops an event that has begun. Read the relevant rule for each, including any rearrangement deadline, before assuming settlement is overdue or incorrect.
As checked on 26 September, bet365's GB football postponement rule uses a five-day window from the original scheduled time: the bet stands if the match is played within that window, unless cancellation is agreed by both sides. Otherwise the match is treated as a non-runner for settlement. This is a specific operator's football rule, not a general waiting period across sports.
Its football abandonment rule treats bets as void before 90 minutes are completed, with an exception for markets whose outcomes have already been fully determined. A first-goalscorer market can therefore settle differently from an unresolved full-time market on the same abandoned match. Read the exact market rule alongside the general football section.
Bet Builder needs its own rules
Do not apply an ordinary accumulator calculation to every same-match combination. Bet365's GB Bet Builder help says selected pre-match player markets can be recalculated when a player selection is void, with eligibility depending on the sport. For other markets it describes the whole Bet Builder as void or push when a component is void or push.
Check the product, pre-match or in-play status, relevant sport and the rule version for your accepted bet. A Bet Builder included inside a wider multiple adds another layer to check. This guide does not promise how an unexamined ticket will settle.
Cash, free bets and account balances
The cash examples above do not establish what happens to a promotional token, a qualifying bet or a bonus. Read the offer's rules on void bets, expiry and whether a token is reissued. Our wagering requirements guide explains why promotional balances and withdrawable cash need separate treatment.
A settled bet and a withdrawal are also different stages. If the issue is money leaving the account after settlement, use our withdrawal checks to identify the stage and information to record. Do not place another bet just to try to unlock or replace an expected return.
A checklist when settlement looks wrong
- Keep the accepted receipt, bet ID and the dates and amounts shown in the account history.
- Identify the exact market, its time period and the rule covering the event change.
- Save the relevant terms with the date you checked them. A later generic help page may not establish which terms applied when you placed the bet.
- Ask the operator to identify the clause used and explain the settlement calculation in writing.
- Separate a disputed result from a payment delay, and describe the outcome you are asking the operator to review.
The Gambling Commission explains that licensed businesses must make bet terms available and provide a complaints route. A rule appearing on a website is not, by itself, an independent decision that every application of it is correct.
If the dispute remains unresolved
For businesses regulated by the Gambling Commission in Great Britain, follow the operator's formal complaints procedure first. The Commission's consumer guidance says the business has eight weeks to resolve a complaint. Keep copies of the evidence and responses. Its ADR guidance explains the independent route after the business's process, including a deadlock letter where applicable; the operator should identify its ADR provider. Referral does not guarantee a particular outcome.
Gambling regulation and complaint routes can differ outside Great Britain, including Northern Ireland. Check the entity and regulator for your account rather than applying GB guidance everywhere.
Does void mean that I won?
No. A returned cash stake produces no profit. A void accumulator leg may reduce the potential return while leaving the remaining selections at risk.
Should I bet again while waiting for a decision?
You do not need to place another bet to ask for an explanation or complain. Avoid chasing a disputed amount. If gambling is causing stress or financial pressure, our safer gambling page links to support, and our account controls guide explains practical ways to pause or restrict gambling.
