Close the account and track the money separately
Closing a gambling account involves more than removing an app. You may still need a return of the cash balance, an answer about an open bet or a record for an unresolved complaint. Ask for the account status and the money status separately so that a closure confirmation does not become your only payment record.
This guide is for adults using online casinos or bookmakers licensed in Great Britain. It does not establish the rules for Northern Ireland or overseas services. The official examples below were checked on 6 October 2026; they illustrate questions to ask, rather than a single process every operator follows. You do not need to place another bet to organise an account closure.
Choose the right type of closure
Check whether the setting is a temporary closure, an indefinite closure, a time-out or self-exclusion. Similar labels can have different effects. For example, bet365's GB account-closure help describes fixed periods and an indefinite option. It says fixed-period online closures automatically reopen when the selected period ends. That is an operator-specific rule, not proof that another casino works the same way.
If gambling is causing harm and you want help to stop, ask specifically about self-exclusion. The Gambling Commission says a business must close the account, return the money held and remove your details from its marketing databases when a self-exclusion agreement is made. Our account-controls guide explains operator exclusions and wider online coverage; our support page links to help.
Do not postpone seeking support because a balance or complaint is unresolved. Ask the business to handle the return of money through its official support process alongside the restriction. An ordinary closure setting should not be assumed to provide the same protection as an exclusion.
Save a short record before access changes
If you can access the account without gambling, keep a private record of:
- The operator, account reference and date of the request.
- The cash balance, bonus balance and any amounts already committed to unsettled bets, as separate figures.
- Pending withdrawal references, amounts, destinations and displayed statuses.
- Open bet or round references and the rules relevant to their settlement.
- Any outstanding document request or complaint reference.
- The closure option selected, its scope and confirmation of when it takes effect.
Use the official website or support route you have independently checked. If access has already ended, ask support for the relevant account and transaction information. Do not create a second account to reach the old balance, and keep full bank details and identity documents out of public posts.
Ask how the remaining balance will be returned
Ask which amount is available for payment, which method will receive it and whether anything remains outstanding. The number on the account screen might include separate balances or transactions that are not yet settled. Our withdrawal checks guide helps distinguish request, review, release and receipt.
LeoVegas's GB terms provide a concrete small-balance example. Clauses 12.1–12.2 describe closing through account settings or support, with contact through support needed to return funds below £10. Clause 9.10.5 permits a reasonable processing fee for those small withdrawals. These are that operator's published conditions, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that a particular charge is fair or applicable.
Request the exact deduction and the net amount before relying on a payment estimate. If a general help page and detailed terms appear inconsistent, save both and ask which rule applies. Our LeoVegas review records a withdrawal-fee question that remains unresolved. Do not deposit or gamble more merely to bring a balance above a minimum.
Keep unsettled bets separate from available cash
Do not assume closing an account cancels an existing bet. LeoVegas clause 12.2 says bets on events that have not yet happened continue to stand and describes sending subsequent winnings after the outcome, subject to its withholding provisions. Read your operator's own rules and ask how you will receive the result and any payment after access closes.
As a hypothetical record, suppose an account displays £18 of available cash and a separate £4 unsettled stake. Record those as two items; do not call the expected payment £22 or assume the stake will be refunded. Ask for the £18 payment status and the £4 bet's settlement status separately. These figures are an accounting example, not suggested gambling amounts.
For a disputed result, retain the original bet reference and relevant rule. Our settlement guide covers void decisions and market rules. You do not need to cash out or place another wager to prove that a bet exists.
Inactivity is a different account status
Leaving an account unused is not confirmation that it has been closed or that the money has been returned. The Commission's consumer guidance says at least 12 months must pass since last use before an account can be treated as dormant. Maintenance fees must be reasonable, disclosed and reflect the cost of maintaining it. The business must try to return the money first and give 30 days' notice before charging from a stated date; deductions can eventually reduce a balance to zero.
If you receive an inactivity notice, record the account, last-use date stated, proposed fee, first charge date and available balance. Ask about returning the money and closing the account through support. Do not interpret a suggestion to make the account active as a requirement to gamble. Keep the notice if you dispute the dates or deductions.
Ask for confirmation that answers each question
You can adapt this original template for an ordinary closure request: “Please confirm the closure of account [reference], the option and effective date. Please identify the remaining cash balance, any pending payment or unsettled bet, and how each will be handled after closure. If a deduction or document is required, please state the applicable condition, amount and next action. Please provide a reference for this request.”
For self-exclusion, state that request explicitly rather than relying on this ordinary-closure wording. Save the acknowledgement and any agreed follow-up date. A confirmation that login has ended does not by itself show that money reached your bank or that every related account is covered.
If money or a decision remains unresolved
Use the operator's formal complaints procedure, retaining the closure date, transaction references, relevant terms and the outcome you are seeking. The Commission's guidance describes escalation of an eligible unresolved dispute to the business's alternative dispute resolution provider after the complaints process, including an unresolved eight-week period. This is not a promised payment time.
Our complaints guide helps organise that record. If the business itself has stopped trading, read its official claims instructions and our customer-funds protection guide; an individual account closure and business insolvency involve different questions.
Does uninstalling the app close my account?
Do not use an app's absence as evidence of closure. Confirm the account status with the operator and retain its acknowledgement. You can seek support without reinstalling an app to gamble.
Should I wait for an open bet before asking to stop?
You can ask about restrictions and support now. Ask the operator how it will settle and communicate existing transactions separately. The presence of a bet or balance is not a reason to continue gambling.
Does closure erase every account record?
Do not infer deletion from a closure confirmation. If you have a privacy question, use the operator's published privacy contact and ask about the information concerned. This guide does not establish an individual right to deletion or a retention deadline.
